The Secret Method to Being Happy Now

The Secret Method to Being Happy Now

I was poor when I learned the secret to happiness…

You see, you don’t need to have money or be wealthy to be happy (although, it’s great, and I recommend you have both!)

I remember when I was super super sad.

I used to cry for hours alone on a fire escape.

Then I finally moved out, away from a bad relationship and the condo with the fire escape, and would cry alone in my new room that I rented in the house I moved to.

This was a time when I felt everything in my life was bad.

Money was bad…was in debt up to the max on several credit cards and credit lines.  I had to break a lease to move out of the condo.

I guess when you hit rock bottom it gives you a reason to look up again.

Whatever the reason, I decided to change my life and be happy instead.

And I succeeded in doing that, even as my money situation got worse before it got better.

So what does it all mean?

It means there is a way to be happy…and you can be happy if you choose to be right now.

Step #1 Choose To Be Happy

When I moved out of my condo I made a choice to be happy.

At the time, I just didn’t want to be sad anymore.

It was too painful.

So I made the decision, but I didn’t become happy right away.

One day my new roommate told me to go to her room and she showed me the movie The Secret.

It really changed my life.

For the first time, I realized that I had control over everything that happened in my life.

I wasn’t a victim, I was a creator.

So, for whatever reason, I had created a lot of sadness.

Now I could create great happiness.

At the time, I was single, and had debt that was getting bigger.

I chose to become happy, find my soul mate, have children and become financially free.

Now, the day I made the decision, it didn’t happen instantly.

However, that was probably the most important day of my happy life =)

Step #2 Practice Gratitude, Affirmations and Doing Things that Make You Happy

In the movie The Secret, they talk about how to manifest anything that you want.

#1 The first step is to practice Gratitude.

When you are in a state of gratitude, then you are happy.

Happiness and gratitude are the feelings you need to manifest anything.

Now if your goal is like mine, to be happy, then gratitude is the first step.

When I was practicing gratitude, I used to log into a website called gratitude log and write down all of the things I was grateful for that day.

Now, I practice thinking about what I’m grateful for before I eat my meals, and when I meditate.

You can write down “I’m so happy and grateful that…” and fill in the blank in a journal.

You can record yourself saying what you are grateful for, and listen to it on a loop during the day when you are working (can you tell I used to do this?)

In any case, if you are serious about being happy, then start with practicing gratitude.

I’ll start first:

I’m grateful that you are visiting my blog and reading this sentence.

I’m grateful that my blog has more and more visitors everyday!

I’m grateful that you were born, and that you are making this world a better place.

I’m grateful for the internet and the ability to reach people from all over the world.

I’m grateful for the English Language.

I’m grateful for the breeze I felt today when I was building sand castles at the beach with Jordan.

I’m so so so grateful to be Jordan’s mother!!!

Now it’s your turn!

#2 Say Happy Affirmations

Affirmations are just sentences that you say to yourself.

Happy affirmations are ones that make you happy!

Here are some affirmations that you can say to yourself:

I am awesome.

I am a gift to this planet.

Everyone I meet benefits from my presence.

I light up the room when I enter.

I’m an amazing person.

I enjoy the moment.

I am so grateful for… (fill in the blank)

Thank you.

I love myself.

I love you.

I am loving today.

Everything happens for a good reason.

What can I learn from this situation.

How is this situation helping me grow?

I am full of love and light.

#3 Do Things that Make You Happy

I personally feel pretty happy after I go for a long run.

Exercise can create a lot of endorphins in your body that will make you feel good.

So, of course, I went running, swimming, biking and worked out a lot because it made me feel good.

It also helped me look good too.

Another activity that makes me happy is watching comedy movies.

I also love going on dates with my husband.

I love going to the beach with my son.

I love going to the zoo with my son.

I love going shopping for gifts with my friends.

I love investing.

I love surfing.

So, what do you love to do?

Whatever you love to do, do that!

Do the activities that you enjoy and do them as often as possible!!!

Step #3 Make Happiness Actions a Daily Habit

Now that we have chosen to be happy, and we are doing the actions to create happiness: 1) practice gratitude 2) say happy affirmations 3) do things that make us happy.

The next step is to do the happiness actions everyday.

Make them a habit.

You might want to write your affirmations on a paper and stick them on your bathroom mirror or on your computer…somewhere that you can look at them everyday.

You might want to record your affirmations and listen to them daily.

I used to listen to positive messages while I went to sleep.

The key is to make happiness actions a daily habit.

After work, I used to go jogging and swimming.

I used to have friends who I would work out with.

Joining a sports club is a great way to stay active and make new friends =)

I joined a bike club while I was training for my Ironman competition.

I started going surfing every morning before work.

Before I knew it, I was so busy enjoying my life, it was easy to be happy =)

Do what feels right for you.

I know a woman who schedules affirmations and happiness actions in her phone.

She gets phone notifications that remind her how wonderful her life is.

Make it a game and think of a fun way to do your happiness actions everyday.

Conclusion

From the Buddhist teachings of the Dhammapada, Chapter 9 on Evil and Good:

“121. Think not lightly of evil, saying, “It will not come to me.” Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the fool, gathering it little by little, fills himself with evil.

122. Think not lightly of good, saying, “It will not come to me.” Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the wise man, gathering it little by little, fills himself with good.”

It’s important to understand that being happy or sad or angry or whatever, there is nothing good or bad with any of these states.

Also, even if you are happy in general, there will be times when you will feel sad or angry or any other feeling.

The point of this blog post is that you can choose to be happy, and the method is in this post.

The Buddhist saying above is telling you that it takes time, and gradually you will become what you practice.

That’s why a sad person can become a happy one.

So gather your drops of happiness and become truly happy =)

Thank you so much for reading this post, and visiting my blog.

I hope it makes you happier!

About Mey Duldulao

Back in 2011 I had over $30,000 in credit card and line of credit debt, was living paycheck to paycheck and was stressed out over my lack of success in my financial life.

In April of 2016, I became debt free and had a monthly passive income stream. I quit my job on December 23, 2016, and started doing my dream work of mentoring others on what I did to create the freedom to quit my job.

In 2017 we bought our first condo in Waikiki, and we went on 5 weeks of vacation (including a 7 day cruise to the Mexican Riviera)!!!

I spend most of my time doing what I dreamed of for years, spending my days with my son Jordan and my husband Jomel, enjoying motherhood and being a wife. I also enjoy researching Financial Freedom and sharing what I learn with my clients and on my blog.
