The Luckiest Man in Babylon – How to Create Your Own Luck

The story begins with Sharru Nada and Hadan Gula. Sharru is the owner of a caravan, with many fine cloths and rugs and goods to be sold at their destination – Babylon.

Hadan is wearing fine robes and fine jewels, and his is the grandson of his partner, Arrad Gula, who he feels he owes a debt that can never be repaid.

He wants to help his grandson Hadan, but he’s not sure how.

Then he sees 3 farmers on the side of the road, and he remembers that he saw them 40 years ago.

He realizes that he has a plan to help Hadan.

“Wouldst thou be interested in hearing how thy worthy grandfather and myself joined in partnership which proved so profitable?” he questioned.

“Why not just tell me how thou madest the golden shekels? That is all I need to know,” the young man parried.

Sharru ignores Hadan and continues to tell him that he saw the farmers on the road 40 years ago when he was walking on the road chained to 3 other slaves.

Hadan is shocked that Sharru was once a slave, and finds out that he was sold into slavery to pay for his brother’s gambling debts!

Sharru goes on to say that the farmers told them that they would die building the walls of Babylon.

Sharru is worried and asks a guard about the wall.

The guard tells him that the first day in Babylon, they are going to a slave market. If he doesn’t get sold there, then he will be sold to the wall the next day. In order to get sold, he needs to show potential owners that he is a good worker.

He tells another slave Megiddo of what he heard, and Megiddo said that makes sense, because masters will value hard work. He said that hard work was his best friend.

At the slave market, they told all of the potential buyers that they were hard workers and great learners.

Finally, Megiddo got bought by a farmer and Sharru got bought by a baker.

He went off with the baker feeling like he was the luckiest man in Babylon.

He worked hard and got so good at baking that he did all of the work and also started going out on the street in the afternoons to sell honey cakes. He got to keep 25% of the money and started saving for his freedom!

While selling honey cakes he met Arrad Gula, Hadan’s grandfather. Arrad asked him why he always worked so hard.

Sharru told him that he learned from Megiddo that work is his best friend, and it has helped him so far by giving him a great master and allowing him to save money to buy his freedom.

Then Arrad whispered to Sharru that even though he went around selling rugs with the help of a slave tending his horse, he also was a slave.

Hearing this, Hadan stopped Sharru from telling the story. He was angry that Sharru said his Grandfather had been a slave.

Sharru continued on with the story after telling Hadan that it was the truth, and that he was noble for overcoming slavery and becoming a successful and well respected man.

So, anyway, Arrad whispers to Sharru that he is also a slave, however, he has saved up enough money to buy his freedom. However, sales have been going down and he’s worried that he won’t make it on his own without the support of his master.

Sharru then tells Arrad that if he has the money he must buy his freedom! Hard work will help him succeed!

Arrad thanks him for encouraging him!

Then later, Sharru realizes that his master has been gambling during the day, since he no longer has to bake anymore.

He gets into too much debt and a money lender comes and takes Sharru and he starts working a very hard job in the dessert carrying sand.

After a few months, he ends up getting heat sickness and losing hope. Then his master sends for him to go back to Babylon.

He goes back to Babylon and finds out that Arrad is his new master! He searched for him and bought him!

He took the clay tablet that proved ownership and threw it to the ground, breaking it into pieces.

He told Sharru that he was a free man, and he wanted him to be his partner!

Sharru felt that he was the luckiest man in Babylon!

After hearing the story, Hadan realized that the key to making money is hard work.

He took off his jewels and rode further behind, to show respect to Sharru. He resolved to work hard like his Grandfather and become successful.
